About Hugh Mackay, cello, and Junyan Chen, piano
Young star of the cello, Hugh, who went to school in Melrose, returns with the winner of 2nd prize at last year’s Leeds International Piano Competition to play three major sonatas. Frank Bridge’s profoundly moving response to WWI contrasts with Prokofiev's equally emotional but joyful piece. Two recent works complete this exciting programme: Fazıl Say’s Four Cities is as lively and varied as the Turkish locations it celebrates; Mark Simpson’s Night Music is hauntingly atmospheric.
