About THE STEAMIE | 26th October

FULL STEAM(IE) AHEAD AS AWARD-WINNING AYRSHIRE THEATRE COMPANY PREPARE TO STAGE SCOTTISH HIT COMEDY CLASSIC - ‘THE STEAMIE’

Stewarton Drama Group are all set to bring their production of Scotland’s best loved hit comedy classic, ‘The Steamie’ to Ayrshire this Autumn, with two evening performances on Thursday 24th & Friday 25th October 2024 at 7.30pm, and one matinee performance at 4.00pm on Saturday 26th October 2024. And the news that the award-winning theatre group are staging the iconic show in the Stewarton Area Centre has already sparked a rush for ticket enquiries across Ayrshire and beyond !

Written by Tony Roper, ‘The Steamie’ first premiered in a successful Scottish theatre tour by Wildcat Stage Productions in 1987 starring Elaine C. Smith and Dorothy Paul, and was later made into a film for STV starring Peter Mullan, Eileen McCallum, and Katy Murphy.

The play is set on Hogmanay 1953 and the women are gathered for the last wash of the year, sharing their secrets from the old year and their hopes for the new one.

As the washing is done, Dolly, Magrit, Doreen and Mrs Culfeathers sing, laugh and cry their way through the last working day of the year, with a little help from the increasingly drunk and not-so-handy washhouse mechanic, Andy.

Doreen dreams of a house in Drumchapel; Magrit is gritty and sarcastic, but with a heart of gold; Dolly is a happy soul who can talk for Scotland; and Mrs Culfeathers is the oldest of the women, bone-weary through a life of drudgery.

Full of gallus patter in the Glesga washhouse, this warm, affectionate and often wildly funny play has become a firm favourite with Scottish audiences. It can have them rolling in the aisles with laughter one moment, and wiping away a tear the next. And of course the famous Galloway’s mince scene is guaranteed to bring the house down. Stewarton Drama Group hope that their audiences will be in for a real treat this Autumn as they continue to celebrate their 50th Anniversary.

A licensed bar of wine will be on sale and a raffle will be drawn at the interval of each performance.

DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO SEE THIS MUCH LOVED SCOTTISH COMEDY CLASSIC RIGHT ON YOUR DOOR-STEP IN AYRSHIRE !
